1) MAE Project

With this first poster there was a lot of angst. I really didn't know where to start or what to do. The illustration helped me calm down because I didn't have to digitally design it, but it took the most amount of time (just to draw it out, then ink it, then erase the pencil lines). I then had to put everything together. That was the most difficult part for me, just the structure of the whole thing. I didn't seem to understand how to put things together and make them look okay. However with help, I soon understood how simple changes and making a big step for an eye catcher can really bring everything together. I'm still having issues with some layouts (despite using guidelines and grids) but I have been using this first project as reference and it has helped me really make future decisions.
2) Type Project

With this project I was dealing with new information from my Chem 100 class as well as the realization that I was assigned two different projects at once, and I wasn't okay with that. But I got to pick my whatever serif font I wanted, and I have to say my favorite is Times New Roman. It's so classy. So, with that going on in my life, I soon found my inspiration of the layout of my typeface from my Chemistry book. With a font like Times New Roman I wanted to find something to dissect it and show how simple and elegant was, then I stumbled upon the Table of Elements. Nothing is simpler than that, everything is clear and straight forward. Every time I look at this poster I always think of seeing it somewhere in a science environment which is 100% what I was going for!

I love jazz, the music has such a fantastic sound! I even love the art that relates to Jazz music even more. It's so simple, like the imagery in Disney's Monsters INC and even the Princess and the Frog where the art is done in 2D forms and all jaggedy and fabulous! I also see Jazz art as clustered and sketchy and fun, so I wanted to use that with my poster and really have my illustration be the attention getter. I soon found a tagline, "If you have to ask what Jazz is" which is from the one and only Louis Armstrong, and it made me curious, so I figured why wouldn't it make otheres interested? However, I was pretty caught up with wanting to show the whole graphic, turns out you don't have to do that and it looks great! The negative/positive space is really fun for me, even though it's simple. Time wise, the illustration took a long time for me to do, and the layout just had a ton of alterations that I couldn't seem to get. The newspaper ad was a breeze, and then the animation was probably the most time consuming because I had forgotten how to create a gif animation. It was rough.

For Christ's sake, I am an illustrator, not a layout artist. This was the project that worried my mom because I told her, "I have a problem with structure." But in the end, I'm actually really happy with it. I realized that newsletters are already complex beings and the only thing you can do to not going on a killing rampage is to make them simpler. What I super duper like about this newsletter is the front page, I mean look at that negative space! WOWZA, SEXY, I would even read this. I did go over time budget for this, so shame on me, but also if this were real life, shame on me for accepting something as awful as a newsletter.
5) Happiness Project

Still not sure how I feel about this, I just don't think it's my best work to be perfectly honest... It may have something to do with the color, I essentially hate the colors yellow and orange.. It's a thing. I also think the article is kind of silly, happiness is something everyone needs, but if they don't know what makes them happy and what doesn't at my age, then.. .get help. Also, sidebar the Happiness song is the single most creepiest thing ever. EVER. I do like the layout, but there isn't much to it. I sadly am admitting that if I see this in a magazine I would pass over it without an afterthought. Though it took me forever to complete and I still couldn't figure it out until I got help.. lots of help. Then the website took forever because I tried doing HTML coding but I'm still trying to learn that through VIS COMM III... but it's there.

What can I say about this poster? Me and it never clicked.. I think what I would do next time is ask the client to give me an all expense paid trip to the Tetons so I can take pictures myself, and use those pictures to design a poster. I really like the structure and layout, that's my favorite part, I like how everything fits, but I just don't like my images in this piece. I think a large DOF photo that takes up the whole poster would be lovely. Wish I could do that, but I'm sure I could buy stock images next time or what not. This is just really frustrating because I actually really like the layout, I really like it! But the images aren't doing it justice.

So, the big thing about this project was the illustration. I have to say this is my favorite illustration by far, its my style and it was really fun to do! But coloring it was what took the longest as well as figuring out how to put in the information for the event. It's weird I just get stuck so easily on essentially one idea (ie the illustration) and then I can't seem to get around it.. I will figure it out. Maybe.
9) Stressed Newsletter Project
Time spent 6 hrs
Well the photography wasn't an issue, but I did get an A-HA moment here, and that was with the triangle that Rusty showed me and how I can link three things with this triangle. I remember in a class I took about architecture that there is this invisible triangle that you want to have in the kitchen that makes getting to the fridge, oven, and sink easier. Or at least it's something like that and I could relate what Rusty talked to me about with something I already had learned. I thought it was really cool.
10) Let's Eat Newsletter Project
Time Spent 12 hrs
Okay... so this was just kind of annoying. I don't like ramen so I had no interest in this whatsoever, despite the article I do not believe you can make ramen delicious. It is a poor fat man's food with no nutritional value. YUCK. But I toughed it out, I did give a really bad picture for the first round.. sorry, just wasn't feeling it, but look how pretty it is now! And all thsoe mute colors, lovely! Ooooh, Aaahhh.
11) 3 Poster Series Project
Time Spent 26 hrs
I LOVE THIS. I like my tag lines, I got so much inspiration from everywhere!!!
Slight problem, I do have the animation on my flash drive... but I don't have a mac.. I have a PC...
Shit.
